The speed and scale of change being driven by AI mean it's not "just another" transformation like the industrial revolution or the internet, says an expert who expects it to widen the gaps between employees' performance.
In terms of scale, "we've never invested so much money in one single technology ever before", says the chief scientist of UNSW's AI Institute, professor Toby Walsh.
Roughly half of the world's R&D budget is being spent on AI, and in the US, the amount being spent on AI data centres alone is 2.5% of its GDP this year, Walsh told the recent ATC 2025 Impact conference.
