Flagging productivity levels are not just an operational challenge, but a wellbeing issue, a business transformation specialist says. Meanwhile, many work tasks are regarded as "illegitimate" and resented by employees, but they can be reframed as opportunities for growth.
Recent conversations such as last month's Productivity Summit seem to have overlooked that employees are working harder but achieving less, says Smartsheet ANZ VP, Jarrod Kinchington.
When they're asked about this dichotomy, most employees will say it's not the volume of work that overwhelms them, but rather the way that work is structured, he tells HR Daily.
"Instead of focusing on meaningful tasks, employees are constantly juggling fragmented systems and duplicating effort," he explains. This causes "project fatigue" – the sense of being perpetually busy but never making progress – which results in frustration, disengagement, and eventually burnout.
