Flexibility in leadership roles a "strategic lever" for gender equality

Just one in eight Australian employers offer part-time or job-share opportunities in leadership roles, despite evidence that greater flexibility could drive down the gender pay gap and improve equality, a new WGEA report shows.

Australia's Gender Equality Scorecard 2024-25, released today, found the gender pay gap has dropped by 0.7 percentage points, from 21.8% last year to 21.1% this year. For every $1 men earn, women earn, on average, 78.9 cents (amounting to a gap of $28,356 a year).

"Reductions to the pay gap and modest improvements towards gender-balance in leadership roles are underpinned by more employers having policies and taking action that can break down gender norms about leadership and caring responsibilities," WGEA CEO Mary Wooldridge says.

While there are "promising signs of progress", with more employers including part-time manager roles in their flexible work policies, further opportunities exist to increase uptake, particularly for men, according to the report...
