Flexibility moves from expectation to regulation

In the space of a year, "holdouts" expecting full-time office returns have become the minority, but a workplace futurist is warning employers to prepare for much greater narrowing of their discretion around flexibility.

In his Future of Work Outlook released today, thought leader Dr Ben Hamer outlines eight key trends shaping work in 2026, and the first of these is "the new rules of work".

"The debate is over. Flexibility won," he states, noting that 71% of workers prioritise flexibility over higher pay, and just 22% of CEOs still expect full-time office returns, down from 82% in 2024.

"In the space of a year, the holdouts became the minority, with 74% of employers having accepted that hybrid is here to stay," Hamer notes...
