Two "seismic" events shaped the HR jobs market over the past 10 years, and the next decade is set to "test and reward great HR professionals even more", according to specialist recruiters.
The Next Step's latest HR Opportunity Index celebrates 10 years of tracking HR job listings (more than 520,000 ads in total), during which time the profession shifted from a supporting function to a board-level strategic imperative, according to CEO Aaron Neilson.
From its baseline in 2015, the Index passed 100 in 2017 (the marker indicating an expanding jobs market), and reached a pre-pandemic peak of 116.4 in June 2019. But in 2020, the Index fell by 52% in just 90 days, to an all-time low of 48.6 in May.
It was a "seismic" event, but the recovery was "faster and stronger than anyone predicted". A new record for HR demand was set in 2022, and in February 2023, the Index reached its all-time high of 225.3, driven by surging psychosocial safety obligations...
