Mental health stigma strongest among younger workers

Despite greater awareness and understanding at a societal level, self-stigma around mental health issues is still an issue in the workplace, and younger employees are suffering "disproportionately", a new report shows.

According to the latest Telus Mental Health Index, self-stigma has declined by only 3% since February 2021, and fear of workplace stigma by just 1%.

Further, employees under 40 who have a mental health issue are 50% more likely than those over 50 to feel negatively about themselves; 37% of workers say they would feel negatively about themselves if they had a mental health issue; and just over half would be concerned about career options if their workplace was aware of it.
