Penalty rates Bill a "backwards step" for employers

The Federal Government has introduced legislation to protect penalty and overtime rates for workers reliant on modern awards.

The Fair Work Amendment (Protecting Penalty and Overtime Rates) Bill 2025, introduced to Parliament today, would amend the Fair Work Act to: ensure the specified penalty or overtime rates in modern awards cannot be reduced; and close loopholes in the modern awards safety net that allow employers to "roll up" penalty and overtime rates into a single rate of pay that doesn't fairly compensate award-reliant employees for remuneration they would have otherwise received...
