Public pay gaps motivating greater focus on equity

The publication of employers' gender pay gaps has noticeably driven up the focus and attention given to pay equity, according to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

Australia's Gender Equality Scorecard 2023-24, released today, shows the new gender pay gap is 21.8%, which means women earn 78 cents for every dollar men earn. This equates to women earning, on average, $28,425 less each year.

The first-time inclusion of remuneration data for CEOs, heads of business and casual managers has driven up the average total remuneration gender pay gap by 0.7 percentage points, from 21.7% in 2022-23. (This will be the new baseline for WGEA's future reporting.)

But excluding those roles, Australia's average total remuneration gender pay gap marginally declined to 21.1% in 2023-24...
