Pursue fixed-term contract exceptions through modern awards: Government

The Federal Government has released its long-awaited response to a Fair Work Act review, committing to further consideration of the fixed-term contract limits and encouraging sector-specific efforts to pursue exceptions.

The review considered the 'Secure Jobs, Better Pay' amendments, which received royal assent in December 2022.

It was conducted by industrial relations academics Emeritus Professor Mark Bray and Professor Alison Preston, who submitted a 409-page draft report to then Workplace Relations Minister Murray Watt in February 2025 (read HR Daily's report at the time).

A final report was submitted in March, and tabled in the Senate in August 2025, making 21 recommendations. The Government's response, released yesterday, supports 13 of these and supports in principle the remaining eight...
