Unchecked autonomy is a "recipe for frustration"

The best organisational cultures celebrate autonomy, but without structure this creates a "recipe for frustration", Atlassian's CEO says.

Every organisation has a distinct culture, with unique approaches to tasks, but autonomy is critical to any employer striving for high performance, Atlassian co-founder and co-CEO Scott Farquhar told Atlassian's recent Team '22 event.

"Humans have a deep desire to exercise independent thought, creativity, and learning," he says.

"We want to be daring, we want to innovate, we want to chart uncharted territories. We all want to be able to sing to our own tune, and the best work cultures encourage and celebrate this..."
