What really makes a great workplace news story, and what doesn't

Attempts to share positive workplace news in the media can go awry if HR practitioners enter the process with preconceived notions about journalism, an experienced editor warns.

Articles published by established news outlets can give HR practitioners – and their organisations – exposure and status that far exceeds anything they'll achieve by posting on company pages or social media, says HR Daily editor Jo Knox.

However, misconceptions about journalism and how the industry works hold many back from engaging, Knox says in an HR Daily Premium webcast on sharing HR stories through the media.

Further, the experience can be a letdown if both sides don't agree on the newsworthiness of what is said – sometimes an HR practitioner is so focused on framing their experience in a positive light that they miss the opportunity to "show, don't tell"...
