Why "too much" control for one employee is "not enough" for another

The definition of too much or too little control, or too much or too little connection, can vary greatly between workplace relationships, according to specialists in the field.

"People are very sensitive to issues of control – whether, from their perspective, they are being controlled too much or not enough, whether they are being given helpful guidance or micromanaged," say organisational communication experts Helen Spencer-Oatey and Domna Lazidou in their new book Making Working Relationships Work.

"People are also very sensitive to issues of connection – whether, from their perspective, they are being included or excluded, whether they are being given enough 'space' to work individually or whether they can collaborate fruitfully with colleagues..."
