Leaders skilled in "self-mastery" create resilient, strong cultures

Self-mastery is a non-negotiable leadership skill in today's workplaces, and it starts with understanding one's own ego, says an executive development specialist.

Speaking as part of a panel at the recent workforce wellbeing event, Sonder Summit 2025, Reo Group CEO Stella Petrou Concha said self-mastery acts as the anchor for all leadership training.

"Self-mastery is what I would call a consolidated skill that takes into consideration all of the things that we do as people and culture leaders, in training and developing our people to have competencies in different environments, like conflict avoidance or conflict intelligence, and how to navigate feedback without taking judgement," she said.

Based on her experience helping boards and executives shape talent strategies, however, she noted that sometimes training isn't effective because the foundational skill of understanding oneself has been overlooked...
