Belonging is best built in-person, but RTO mandates won't help

Time spent in-person with colleagues can build a valuable sense of belonging at work, but if employers really want to create this, mandating a return to the office is one of the worst ways to go about it, a culture expert warns.

In-person time is invaluable, but in many cases, the reasons why leaders are urging people to return to the office have more to do with productivity, and an outdated belief that more office time is the answer, Bendelta leadership and change practitioner Kirsty Harvison tells HR Daily.

"We know it's more complex than that," Harvison says. "Real productivity happens when people have a sense of belonging and they're aligned to purpose and a culture that really galvanises engagement"...
