Most new CHROs have come from outside the organisation, and those appointed internally are less likely to be promoted to the C-suite, according to a new report that lays blames on a lack of senior HR succession planning.
The Josh Bersin Company report, Understanding the path to CHRO, which is based on job and career data from 500 senior HR leaders across the world, identifies four distinct pathways to the role.
"Company CHROs" move through the ranks internally, "career CHROs" obtain the role after moving from company to company, "business CHROs" move from a business position to HR for development, and "operations CHROs" move from an administrative position to HR to address a business issue, it says...
