HR leaders prone to certain "derailers" on path to CEO

Many professionals believe hard work alone will pave the way to top leadership roles, but that's not how CEOs are made, according to a coach who specialises in the CEO transition.

In her new book, So You Want to be the CEO, leadership advisor Barbara Wilby, who has 25 years of coaching and advisory experience, says aspiring CEOs can prepare for the role by building self-knowledge, self-governance, adaptability and resilience.

Wilby recommends prospective CEOs lay "the creative foundations" for the role by connecting with their highest values and mastering "potential derailers".

She says it's helpful to explore their core values and beliefs about themselves, what inspires them, what gives them purpose as a leader, and their strengths.

It's also important to think about the kind of organisation they want to lead, and their vision for it...
