HR team debriefs enhance wellbeing and foster learning

The busy nature of HR roles means most teams rarely debrief between stressful events, but making time to do so in a structured way has multiple benefits, according to a conflict specialist.

"[HR teams] are constantly exposed to difficult situations, and people who are having difficulties, and so their exposure to that mounts up," The Zalt Group director Zandy Fell tells HR Daily.

When there's an incident in the workplace, HR staff are expected to be professional, and not share their feelings with the employees they're supporting, she notes.

"You're around people all day, but you're expected to be the expert in the room, so it's quite a lonely job."

As one incident is resolved another often arises, Fell adds. And although HR teams often help others debrief, they'd benefit from investing more in debriefing themselves, she says...
