After years of managers hearing, "Put the person first, support the whole human", the pendulum has started swinging back towards prioritising performance, a strategic HR advisor says.
According to Jonathan Tabah, director analyst in Gartner's HR practice, there has always been a "tug of war" between the interests of business owners and their employees.
"Employees want more pay, they want more benefits, they want more resources, and business owners are trying to retain value for shareholders. That's just the way it works."
During the pandemic, organisations said to managers, "Support the whole person", and told employees, "Bring your whole self to work", Tabah says; this was necessary when employees were having to work from home under trying circumstances, often with their children present as well...
