By focusing on the values that drive them, leaders become less vulnerable to external pressures and expectations, and can be more effective in their roles, a development and transformation specialist says.
The Performance Code founder and CEO Kylee Stone says she's not surprised by research showing most leadership development spend is ineffective, given many programs attempt to change what people say and do, rather than the values and beliefs that lie beneath the surface.
It's these internal values that drive leaders' decisions and behaviour, she tells HR Daily, and they're a "gateway to accountability".
"No matter what is going on, if you can step back from any challenge and then ask yourself, what are the values that are driving you... you're not looking at what's happening externally," she says...
