Manager "out of his depth", dismissal fair

An employer has defended sacking a manager for being "out of his depth" when it came to implementing procedures, training subordinates and generally connecting with colleagues.

The Skyfield Homes estimating manager was dismissed in August last year for failing to support and train his team, communicate effectively with others, and complete estimating tasks in a timely manner.

In claiming unfair dismissal, the employee told the Fair Work Commission he wasn't notified of the reasons for the employer's decision and therefore had no opportunity to respond.

The Commission heard that in late 2020, shortly after he joined the company, the employer began receiving complaints from sales staff about the manager's slow response to sales quotations. The manager also refused to use its preferred software program, which it claimed made communication with him difficult...
