Managers can re-enthuse "stuck" employees by doing the basics well

A growing number of employees are lacking motivation and feeling "stuck" at work, which calls for a back-to-basics approach from their managers, often with HR's help, a Gartner director says.

"The reason we're thinking that employees are feeling stuck, is we're seeing two things that are working against each other," Gartner HR advisory director Neal Woolrich tells HR Daily.

Sharing the latest results from Gartner's quarterly talent monitor research, he says employees' "intent to stay" is rising – from 32.9% in Q1 2025, to 35.3% at the end of Q2.

"But at the same time, their discretionary effort is falling," he says, from 19.9% to 18.1%...
