Managing workplace conflict requires soothing the "animal brain"

Quiet conflicts exist in every workplace, but by implementing five key principles, leaders can address the underlying 'primal' drivers and facilitate effective resolution, says a conflict coach.

In her new book, Shrinking Elephants, workplace mental health specialist Genevieve Hawkins explores the animalistic drivers of conflicts, and how leaders can address workplace "elephants" early to prevent their disastrous impacts.

"Conflict exists in every organisation. Sometimes very obviously. Sometimes quietly. Very few love it... It causes tension in individuals and energy to leak from the organisation," Hawkins says.

The way to conflict resolution is through collaboration, understanding, and trust, she says, so leaders "need to develop the skills to navigate, what can be clunky conversations, to shrink elephants"...
