Retirement considerations didn't justify flexible work order

The fact that an employee was over 55 years old and considering retirement didn't mean his employer had to approve his flexible work request, the Fair Work Commission has ruled.

The 61-year-old Boeing Aerostructures Australia planning engineer had requested to work from home on Mondays and Fridays, because he was seeking to transition to retirement.

But the employer denied his flexible working request, setting out its business grounds for doing so in writing.

The employee then lodged a dispute in the FWC, seeking an order for the arrangement he sought. Boeing objected, arguing the request wasn't validly made because it wasn't sufficiently connected to his particular circumstances and reasons...
