Simple formula helps tackle common leadership derailer

Employers can't force their leaders to get more sleep, but they can educate them about a simple formula that makes a big difference, according to an executive coach.

In his work with leaders, Peter Black uses psychometric testing to gain insight into leaders' personalities, and what might derail them when they're under pressure. He also examines their thinking preferences, how they change when they're under pressure, and what might be causing them pressure.

A common culprit, he says, is lack of sleep.

Black notes that while many leaders he coaches are suffering from poor sleep, they often don't recognise it. They might rely on caffeine and sugar, and be less productive and engaged than they could be, but they haven't given it a second thought...
