Taking a "tactical" approach to psychological safety

Employers can be "incredibly tactical" about psychological safety, but many focus on interpersonal dynamics without realising that other factors, such as lack of role clarity, might be just as relevant, according to an HR advisor.

"When we talk about psychological safety, our automatic knee-jerk reaction is to immediately think about interpersonal dynamics, and in many cases that is the right place to look," Gartner director Jonathan Tabah tells HR Daily.

"But that is not the only place to look," Tabah says. "You can be incredibly tactical and operational with this stuff."

Another key factor to examine is role clarity, because as organisations change, expectations of what employees should deliver, and how they should deliver, change as well. And when an employee becomes unsure about how their performance will be evaluated, "that can bring with it a sense of fear"...
